After writing how wonderful ginger is l couldn't leave out turmeric. It's a traditional Indian spice. One that historically was used in Ayurveda and other Indian medical systems, along with Eastern Asia and traditional Chinese medicines. Turmeric comes from the root of the curcuma longa plant. A flowering plant which is of the ginger family Zingiberaceae. The rhizomes (continuously growing underground stem) are used in cooking .

Turmeric like ginger has a long list of benefits and uses. The turmeric is used in cooking, a major ingredient in curry. It's what gives curry is amazing color. It's the curcumin that's the active ingredient that has potent biological properties. Its a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, it like ginger moves the blood around the body helping to prevent clots . For this reason you shouldn't have turmeric 2 weeks before an operation or if you are on blood thinners always ask your doctor or vet.

Also like ginger, start of small and don't over do turmeric a little goes a long way. There are side effects if used too much. An upset stomach, acid reflux, diarrhea, headaches . Check it won't interact with any medications .

The health benefits of turmeric include .

It helps ease Depression and has the potential to help anti-depressants work better.

Curcumin can help flight inflammation and keep blood sugar levels steady which can lead to it helping prevent and treat type 2 diabetes. A study of 240 adults with pre-diabetes taking curcumin for 9 months had their odds of developing diabetes lowered.

A lot of studies on this have actually been on animals too.

It is well known for fighting infections colds, flu and probably covid.

Studies are continuing to look at the health protective possibilities of turmeric . Research is ongoing and some have found that turmeric can lower LDL the bad cholesterol . A small study also found it helped ward off heart attacks in people who had by pass surgery.

The well known anti-inflammation is said to help flight Alzheimer's although no strong scientific evidence has proved this many people use turmeric for Alzheimers and did you know your pets can get Alzheimers too .

IBS a study of 207 adults and one using rats found turmeric helps IBS symptoms, Its being studies as a treatment for diseases like Crohns and ulcers .

There are some evidence that curcumin can kill certain cancer cells. It is said to have the best effects on breast, bowel, stomach and skin cancer cells. The laboratory studies are showing the anti cancer effects . It targets and kills the cancer cells and not the healthy cells so unlike chemo which targets all the cells .There has also been studies suggesting curcumin be combined with chemotherapy treatment.

Until further studies are done it isn't suggest you use curcumin to treat cancer . In yourself or your dog Saying that if used dosed properly it will do no harm . Please go to your doctors/vets for advice . A holistic doctor would be a great option to have too . The main problem isn't so much with does curcumin work its more with its ability to get absorbed easily by the body enough to be giving as a treatment .

It also inhibits DNA genotoxic damage , reduces organ damage from molds . Curcumin 2 mg 3 times daily . Dr Karen Becker....

Did you know dry kibble foods suffer from molds. This group of molds are called mycotoxins The more cheap fillers a dog food has for example corn, wheat, rice bran and soy the more chance of these molds and since kibble is high heat processed and voided of all nutrients . They are sprayed back onto the food using sympathetic vitamins . This kibble is then sprayed with oils to make it tasty to dogs which can then go rancid . It is advised if you have to feed kibble, to keep it in the bag then put the bag into an air tight container. Buy small bags and replace often. Mycotoxins spread fast.

A dosage suggested for dogs for black molds for turmeric is 1/4 tsp per 10 lbs and curcumin is 200 mg per 10 lbs .

I use it mainly for anti-inflammatory for myself and my dog which l make golden paste. This is heating 1 to 1 1/2 cups of filtered spring water with 1/2 cup of organic turmeric power ( you can use fresh) with black pepper 1 tsp and 1/3 cup of coconut oil. This can be frozen into small sections and used daily or when needed . I make mine a little larger than Barkleys and often put it in my coffee or tea.
